Security Door Solutions for Renters

Posted on

As a renter, you may not have the option to install a permanent security door on your home or apartment. However, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your sense of security. Several practical solutions can provide added protection without requiring major renovations or permanent changes to your rental property.

Door Barricades

Door barricades are devices installed on the interior side of a door to provide added security in the event of a break-in. They are made of strong, durable materials such as metal or reinforced plastic, and you can either choose those that can be opened from the outside with a key or those that are only accessible from inside your house.

Temporary Security Gates

Another great solution for renters is to install a temporary security gate. These gates can be easily installed and removed, making them a convenient option. They can be placed at the entrance to a hallway, stairwell, or any other area to block access and provide an extra layer of security. Temporary security gates are typically made of metal or heavy-duty plastic and can be adjusted to fit different doorway sizes.

A Permanent Security Door

It's not uncommon to feel that a permanent security door is the only way you'll feel safe. If this is the case, approach your landlord and ask them if you can install one; remember, you don't want to breach your tenancy agreement. You can even offer to pay for the door or split the cost with your landlord. Don't forget to do your due diligence, especially on regulations pertaining to security doors in rentals.

Supplemental Security Measures

In addition to the options mentioned above, you could enhance the security of your rental property by:

  • Adding a security film

This is a thick, clear film applied to a window's interior. It is designed to hold the glass in place if it is broken, preventing burglars from easily breaking through the window.

  • Installing deadbolts and high-security locks

Deadbolts are lock cylinders opened by a key from the outside and a turning motion from the inside. They are considered more secure because they aren't easily forced open or picked. On the other hand, high-security locks utilise a unique key design or special pins. They are considered secure because they are difficult to bump or pick. Keep in mind, though, no lock is completely secure. It's advisable to have multiple layers of security.

Call a security company if you want to add security doors to your building.
