Mistakes Many People Make When Buying a New Mattress

Posted on

The mattress you have in your bedroom at home is very important, as you may very well spend a good one-third of your day on it! The right mattress can mean a good night's sleep, whereas a wrong mattress can keep you tossing and turning all night, and also result in back pain, headaches, and other discomfort. To ensure you get the right mattress for yourself, note a few mistakes many people make when making their purchasing decision, so you can avoid them yourself and come home with a comfortable mattress that you'll love for years.

Too soft

Getting a mattress that's too soft is a common mistake, as many people assume that they should be sleeping on a soft surface versus a stiff one; however, a mattress that's too soft won't offer enough support for your muscles. Note, too, that many people only test mattresses in stores for a few minutes, not a full eight hours; that soft surface can feel good underneath you for a minute or two, but after many hours, your body's muscles may begin to ache from not having that needed support. In many cases, a mattress that's somewhat soft but which still offers some firmness under you is the better option than one that's overly soft and cushioned.

Too expensive

If you want a mattress made with high-quality materials, you will probably need to pay a higher price for it, and brand names will usually offer a longer warranty on their product, which can be worth any extra cost. However, a high cost alone isn't the determining factor for what mattress is going to be the most comfortable; some cheaper brands may offer the same materials and thickness as name brands, or you might buy a cheaper mattress and wrap it in a low-cost mattress pad for added cushioning. While you do want to invest in a quality mattress, look beyond the price tag while shopping.

Not organic

If you have sensitive skin, allergies or other breathing disorders, or simply prefer eco-friendly products in your house, look for an organic mattress. This is one that will be made with natural products that are free of petroleum and other such irritants. Some organic foam mattresses will be made with plant oils rather than petroleum, and some will be made with cotton versus polyester, nylon, and other man-made fabrics. Don't assume that all mattress materials are alike, but take extra time to look for those organic products you want in your home.
